Thanks for the post. How about when you teach kids to save find a bank that has 4 parts. One for spending, one for long-term savings (for bigger items), one for investing, and one for giving. Great habits to get our kids saving for everything.

Thank you for adding your "2 cents!" We appreciate the tips, John and CreditMom!

It's amazing how our early experiences with money help to shape our later habits.

These are great tips. I would like to share something else. When giving your children allowance, have them budget for the month instead of week to week. This way it teaches them to always put aside money for necessities first. This will help when they're out on their own paying rent.

Another thing I do is a wallet check whenever we go to a store. This way if the kids want to buy something (with my approval) they have the money for it. I find they are less reckless with their own money than mine!

Dr. Robyn,

Great article. Sam is a terrific guy - we both belong to the Jump$tart Coalition, a non-profit who's goal is to improve youth financial literacy. Thanks for blogging so much about this incredibly important topic. Parents need to be aware of the importance of starting young. In addition to being the creator of "The Money Mammals" DVD, I am also a parent, and I'd like to add that one of the most effective means that I've found for teaching very young kids about saving is to make it tangible - with goals. You find out more at my blog, http://teachkidsmoney.blogspot.com/.
